Aquarium Basics

By Renske Buursma

First, you will need to figure out what kind of equipment you will need for your aquarium. The first thing you should do is choose a place in your home where you will have your aquarium, remembering that these tanks are heavy. Choose shorter aquariums rather than taller ones to keep your fish healthy. If this is your first interaction with fish, or you havent taken care of fish in a long time you should go for an aquarium that is more than 10 gallons, because having more water is better for your fish.

Aquarium Lids and Lights

Now you will need a lid and light for your fish tank. Most aquariums will come with a lid and light as a package. Generally, glass lids are a better choice for you and your fish. More light can enter the tank without as much evaporation, and you can easily clean the lid. Even though a light will usually come with your aquarium, you should consider buying a light specific for your tank. The best light to choose is not incandescent, but florescent with a natural day light bulb.

Aquarium Filters

Aquarium filters are important because this is the device that will clean the tanks water on a regular basis. There are three different types of filters to choose from: mechanical, chemical and biological. Usually, a biological filter is your best choice because these filters will remove the fishs waste while the others do not.

Now you just need to consult your local pet store to find out which fishes would be best for you and your family according to size and care. While you are there clear up any questions or concerns you may have, and pick up some fish food recommended by the pet store owner.

Now you are well on your way to having a wonderful, relaxing and healthy addition to your home, as well as some nice little additions to your family. You can add some decorations to your aquariums found from the pet store to add some atmosphere for your new fish friends and for your family. Relax and enjoy your new healthy pet choice and watch your aquarium grow.
