Something to Consider with your Fish Tank Filtration

by Mike Kelley

You're probably reading this right before or right after getting a new aquarium. However, you'll need more than just an aquarium and some water to make a home for your new fish " fish tank aquariums also require a filtration system to keep the water clean and your fish healthy. When you use an inadequate filtration system in your tank, you can easily end up with no fish at all before you know it!

First of all, if you fail to make sure that you are getting the right filtration system for your fish tank, you are going to have a big mess to clean all of the time. This is because the extra food not eaten and the waste from the fish will not be properly sucked into the filter as it should be. Instead, all of the mess will be left for you to clean. And depending on the size of your fish or how many you have in there, you could be looking at having to clean your whole fish aquarium a few times a week. Since this is a messy and time-consuming job, you probably will not want to be faced with that.

Not keeping your aquarium clean enough means sick, possibly dying fish. Remember, your fish are your pets and it's your responsibility to make sure that they're safe, healthy and happy. You wouldn't neglect to feed your dog, would you? Of course you wouldn't " so take good care of your fish too by keeping their tank clean. You'd feel terrible if something happened to them which you could have prevented " and of course, you'll also be out the money you spent on your fish. It's far better to just get a good filtration system for your aquarium from the start.

For starters, you need to know what size of aquarium you've got. If you have a 50 gallon fish tank, then shop for a filtration system accordingly. Aquarium filtration systems will list the sizes of tank they are designed for right on the box. However, what you should do is find a system which is designed for your tank, then get the next size up.

You'll want a filtration system with a larger capacity than you need, strictly speaking since you don't want to spend all of your free time cleaning your aquarium. The size listed is not necessarily right for your tank, no matter what the box says. You want one which is strong enough to keep the water in your aquarium clear; so you'll need one size up from the capacity of your tank. A filtration system isn't cheap, so don't waste money " get a filtration system which is more than large enough to start with.

It's always good to go with a larger aquarium filtration system. Choosing a system which is the same capacity as your tank or smaller will leave you with a lot of trouble and a lot of wasted time, not to mention a huge mess.
