Koi Care: Maintaining Your Pond During The Summertime
Summertime is the best time for your Koi pond. In this season, temperatures are great, letting you enjoy your pond even more. But you should continue to take care and maintain your pond during this season. Keeping in mind those few necessary things during the summertime will keep your pond staying beautiful and lively.
High temperature can cause less amount of oxygen:
During the summertime, the oxygen content of your pond will decrease. Therefore, necessary measures should be taken, especially if you live in places where warm temperatures occur mostly. A good indication that your pond doesn't have high enough concentration of oxygen is when you see your fish hanging out towards the top of the surface of the pond, seemingly gasping for air. You can always put extra features for your pond like waterfalls and fountains in order to keep the oxygen moving.
The more motion the water will be having, the more available oxygen there there is for your fish. Also, if these features are not available, you can always change the pond's water frequently to give your fish the necessary amount of oxygen that they need.
Always watch out for evaporation:
A lot of heat could cause the water to evaporate at a faster rate. Pay close attention to your pond's water levels, and do the necessary adjustments afterwards. It is important to remove all of the chlorine from the water that you're going to add.
Summertime is the time for parasites:
Heat brings on those parasites and illnesses, and because most of these parasites are not visible, it's important for you to watch your fish for those signs of diseases. Symptoms like, rubbing against objects, scratching, shivering or shaking is an indicator of different types of illnesses.
Pay attention to your pets if they start to develop visible spots on their body (they may also knock off some of their fins)!). If you obeserve any of these changes, you can contact your Koi dealer, vet and local pet store as soon as possible. Some of the parasites may cause only little damage, but illnesses like the Koi herpes virus can really cause serious problems to your fish, that's why it should be treated immediately.
Feeding Your Pet:
To ensure the health of your fish throughout the summer, give them food filled with nutrients. Give them low-protien food at least one or three times daily. If your fish seem to be still hungry after you have fed them, you can slightly increase the feeding amount. Remember that if you feed your pets with only small amounts of food, it will prevent the spoiling of food. There will be a lot of uneaten foods that will spoil quickly if you feed them in large amounts (which can cause issues in water quality).
Your fish will only eat what's necessary for their survival, and will leave those extra ones. Feeding your fish will also cause less oxygen content in the water, and this can be an issue during the summertime, as oxygen depletes in high temperatures. This can be solved by feeding your pets in colder times of the day.
Summer is the best time to feed your Koi using your hand. Through this, you'll get to know your fish a little better, and they will familiarize you as someone who takes good care of them. You can also get kids in this kind of activity, which would be an unforgettable experience for them!
