Koi Water: Great Tips On How To Prevent Overpopulation
When it comes to Koi ponds, overpopulation is one of the biggest problems that a pond owner will ever get to face. This can cause significant problems for your pond, even causing death to your pets. For this, here are a few ways to prevent overpopulating your pond. Following these steps will reduce greatly your chances of getting into such problems.
Never Overstock:
Overstocking is one of the common problems among new Koi pond owners. When you first purchase your fish, decide between a number of fish that are equally playful and beautiful so as to save your own pond from overstocking. You can always talk with your local pet store professional or Koi dealer with regards to the specifications of your pond.
Tell them how big your pond would be, the type of filtration systems you use, and where you're planning to place your pond. These necessary and helpful information will be able to help them successfully predict the right amount of fish that you can have in your pond. No need to worry if they look small, as your Koi will grow very fast!
One of the dilemmas that owners or people run into is not able to turn down offers from others. When you are being offered with a fish by other pond owners, you should look at why they're offering you their fish (which can be due to overpopulation). If you are to turn down those offers, it doesn't mean you are causing damage to your pets, but the owner may just have to find a different person to sell the fish to.
Steps To Take Once Overpopulation Has Occurred:
When your pond has reached overpopulation, here are some steps to remove the babies from it. A good way is to stop feeding your Koi once you see that spawning has alreday happened. Stop feeding your Koi for no less than 3 weeks. Don't worry about your pets starving, for they will focus on the natural food available for them if they don't get fed regularly. Their natural diet includes their offspring.
Although they're not one of those cannibalistic types of animals, it's natural for them to eat their young when they're still eggs or if they're small, resembling insects. Once the babies will look like the real fish, the adult will no longer see them as food. Although this may seem cruel, it's just a natural process.
It's very important for you to start this process as soon as you will observe spawning or babies in your pond. You can give the unwanted babies away to the local zoos, local Koi societies and local pet stores which have programs for accepting unwanted animals and they'll provide shelter for them (some of them will even pay you cash since they're going to sell them). You can log on to online forums and post your information there with regards to your extra Koi babies.
