What You Must Know About Angelfish

Freshwater angelfish are one of the most easily recognized, and also one of the most beautiful fish that can be found in a fresh water aquarium.

Angelfish are heralded for their unique body, color and behavior. Many fish enthusiasts consider angelfish to be a relatively smart fish, with the ability to recognize their owners.

Angelfish, which actually get their name from the unrelated marine angelfish, come from the Amazon Region and its surrounding water basins. Although they are cichlids, they are generally not overly aggressive and are relatively peaceful and slow moving by nature, only occasionally becoming aggressive or territorial during feeding and spawning.

Angelfish are cichlids, although their round bodies and triangular fins are quite different from most cichlids which normally have sleeker shapes. This body form serves angelfish well however, as it allows them to stay hidden among the vertical roots and plants that makeup most of the angelfishes natural habitat . In the wild angelfish eat both live food and plant life. They are ambush hunters and will stay hidden among the plants and wait for smaller prey to swim by.

Caring for Angelfish Angelfish, because they come from South America, thrive best in a warm aquarium, preferably around 76-80F. Angelfish have insatiable appetites and thus should be fed only moderate amounts of food several times throughout the day. If overfed they will become lethargic and are more likely to have health problems. When properly cared for angelfish can survive in an aquarium for up to 15 years. Angelfish, again because of their natural habitat in forested river areas, will survive best if kept in a slightly acidic environment, with a pH below 7.0.

Although angelfish are generally more peaceful than their aggressive cousins, they are still members of the cichlid family, and they will eat smaller fish if given the opportunity.
